A Peek at our Week
Language Arts: After reading fiction stories, we discuss the setting, characters problem(s) and solution(s). We also work on retelling the story in order. When reading nonfiction stories, we look for true facts and important details. Try discussing these when reading at home with your child. Our complete list of sight words taught so far is: can, the, a, I, like, see, my, this, is, to, go, am, look, he, she, for, we, you, with, play, love, little, said, was, put, some do, want, have, are, they, good, then, ate, could, her, all, over, when, no, by, must, there and away.
Mathematics: The students created their own surveys to learn more about their classmates. They then turned that data into a graphic representation. We also did skip counting with calculators and further explored pan balances.
Science / English Language Development (ELD): We focused on snails this week. We had opportunities to observe and hold real snails and even held a very exciting snail race. Our learning and discussion focused on what snails need, have and can do.
Art: We made Keely Kangaroo for our letter Kk Alphafriend. We also made snails out of construction paper. Look for these adorable snails at Open House.

Mathematics: We played two really fun subtraction games: Disappearing Train and Hiding Bears. We also continued our exploration of 3Dimensional shapes. We are focusing on spheres, cubes, cylinders, rectangular prisms and cones. Help your child find objects in their environment that are these shapes.
English Language Development (ELD): We began our “Animal Life Cycles” unit this week. We started with fish and we’ll move on to worms, snails, butterflies, ladybugs and chicks over the next six weeks. Ask your child to tell you about Hungry Fish (our new class pet).
Art: We made Edna Elephant for our letter Ee Alphafriend. We also used tempera paint and bubble wrap to replicate fish scales on a fish art project we are working on.
